Reading at Shelley College

Reading is a key part of our learning journey at Shelley College and a major mechanism of this strategy is Form Time Reading which takes place on Tuesday for Y10 and Y11 forms and on Thursday for Y9 forms.  Students, with the help of their tutor, complete structured guided reading tasks each week aimed at improving their reading comprehension and fluency.

Reading is also a key part of the curriculum across all subjects at Shelley College and each subject has a recommended reading list to promote reading for pleasure.

It is important to identify those in need of extra support swiftly, so students complete a New Group Reading Test (NGRT) every year to ascertain their reading ability and determine a reading age. Those in need of extra support will then be further screened to determine whether they need phonics support with trained members of our Student Support team or one on one reading support from a peer or adult Reading Friend.  These strategies are outlined in the Shelley College Reading Journey.
