Shelley College ICT Department

A2 I.C.T.

How is the course organised?

As with the AS course you will study three units:

Unit 7: Using Database Software

Assessment

Many people who use ICT can only do so because someone has set the system up for them, that's what this section is all about. You will use create a database to solve a real world problem. Very similar to Unit 3 - the Spreadsheet Unit - this unit is assessed via a practical examination of 10 hours; thankfully not in a row!Assessment

Your assessment will be a practical examination. In 10 hours spread over 3 weeks you will use the computers in school to produce a database for a complex ICT problem under exam conditions - stressful, pressured and just like the real world!!

A2 Level ICT Coursework

Units 8 and 10 are delivered and assessed together. Unit 8 is about the design and investigation of a real life problem and you will have to produce a solution for an end-user.

Unit 8: Managing an ICT Project

You know how difficult it can be to juggle resources and make effective use of time. Imagine how much more difficult it is when the project you are managing involves large numbers of people, lots of resources and substantial amounts of money! Determining what has to be done when and by whom, keeping track of progress and reporting to senior management requires considerable expertise. Perhaps not surprisingly, a large number of projects — particularly in ICT — do not fully meet their objectives. Some fail spectacularly!

It is now widely recognised that specialist knowledge and skills are required to manage projects successfully. This unit will introduce you to some formal project management tools and methods and give you an opportunity to use specialist software to plan and monitor projects. You will be able to put into practice what you have learnt by setting up and running a small-scale software project. You will have to draw upon the knowledge and skills you have learned throughout the course in order to plan for and produce the required software product. It is assumed that you already have skills in at least two different software applications and some experience of the processes involved in software design and implementation.

Unit 10: Using MultiMedia Software

Many people who use ICT can only do so because someone has set the system up for them, that's what this section is all about. You will use a spreadsheet model to investigate possible scenarios and make recommendations.

Assessment

Your assessment will be a website showcasing the MultiMedia products you produce.
You will use the computers in school to produce answers to a complex ICT problem under exam conditions - stressful, pressured and just like the real world!!
