What are the ICT Facilities like?

In comparison to most schools Shelley College has invested a lot of money in ICT facilities and teaching staff.

The facilties used by Post 16 Students for ICT lesson in D36 are very good. The room is smaller than most and has desks in the middle where design and development work, and discussion can take place.

The school has also invested a great deal of time and money into developing the Virtual Learning Environment and all Year 12 and Year 13 ICT courses involve a great deal of eLearning. This facility is available from outside school as well thus allowing students access to teaching materials 24-7-365. (If they wish ;-)

ICT Courses Offered

AS and A2 Applied ICT - Examination board - EdExcel

AS I.C.T

How is the course organised?

For the AS course you will study three units:

Unit 1: The Information Age

Assessment

For this unit you will create a website to highlight your findings - this is assessed by your teacher and moderated by the exam board.

Content

The greatest step forward in ICT terms in the last century was probably the increase in online services. In this section you will investigate and evaluate a wide variety of Online services and evaluate them and their impact on people's lives.
Examples might be:
Banking, financial, auction sites, eGovernment, Entertainment, music, film, radio, etc.

Unit 2: The Digital Economy

Do YOU buy online?
How many others do you think do?
What makes you buy from a particular site?
How often do you visit your favourite sites?
Why?

For this unit you will investigate and evaluate a single transactional website - such as Play.com, Amazon.co.uk, eBay.co.uk etc and try to work out what they do and why they are successful.

Assessment

Your assessment will be by creating your own website to explain and present your findings.

Unit 3: The Knowledge Worker

Many people who use ICT can only do so because someone has set the system up for them, that's what this section is all about. You will use a spreadsheet model to investigate possible scenarios and make recommendations.

Assessment

Your assessment will be a practical examination. You will use the computers in school to produce answers to a complex ICT problem under exam conditions - stressful, pressured and just like the real world!!
