19 students from Year 9, accompanied by Mrs Wilson and Miss Cowie, enjoyed a whirlwind visit to Berlin. Students set off from school on the Friday of the Spring Bank Holiday for a sun-soaked extended weekend in this exciting and fascinating capital city.
They saw all the famous landmarks including the iconic Brandenburg Gate, the impressive Reichstag building and even Checkpoint Charlie! Fabulous panoramic views were had of the city from the top of the famous TV Tower, in the heart of the former East Berlin. Students were moved by their visits to the thought-provoking Jewish Memorial and Jewish Museum.
Other highlights included a guided tour of the historic Olympic Stadium, built for the 1936 Olympic Games, and venue of the recent 2006 World Cup Final. Some students particularly enjoyed the experience of sampling the eerie atmosphere of the largest underground nuclear bunker built in Berlin during the Cold War period!
Others preferred the more sedate sampling of local delicacies in a typical Eiscafé or a spot of retail therapy on the Ku’damm, one of the most exclusive shopping areas in Europe! All in all, an action-packed trip with something for everyone!
