This year’s trip began at 3.45am on a cold Wednesday morning. We made our way to Manchester airport tired but excited at the prospect of going to Martha’s Vineyard. We arrived on the Vineyard at approximately 7.00pm their time and all went on to our various hosts’ homes.
We went on various excursions during our 10 days stay; these included a tour of the island visiting various historic areas of the island, Natural History Museum at Harvard University, Tour of Rose Cliff mansion which has been used in films such as The Great Gatsby, True Lies and 27 Dresses. One of the highlights of the trip was when we were on a beach on Chappaquiddick Island and three Seals kept popping their heads above the water to see what we were up to. The students also had the opportunity to attend a couple of lessons with their hosts to allow them to see what school life is like on the island.
During the weekend the students had free time with their exchange partner where the families organised various activities for them. Some went to New York, others went to Boston and were lucky enough to stay over night there. They also had chance to do some shopping. Oh yes that’s one of the things I haven’t mentioned our students certainly know how to shop, we always managed time to pick up souvenirs and presents for those back home.
On our final day we wet to Quincy Market in Boston and went on a Duck Tour of the City. This was a wonderful way to end what had been a thoroughly enjoyable trip. I would just like to say a personal thank you from Mrs Rayner, Mrs Hieatt and I to the students who came with us, their behaviour and conduct throughout the trip added to its success, they were a pleasure to be with.
We now look forward to our American friends returning to us in April when I hope we can make them feel just as welcome as they made us.
