International Climate Change Convention
On the 3rd-5th July 2009 Batley Girls’ High School and Kirklees Environment Partnership are holding an International Climate Change Convention over the first weekend in July. A full overview of the weekend can be found at the end of this bulletin. The event will open on Friday 3rd July with the launch of the Kirklees Climate Change Plan, and an evening’s entertainment on climate change from local poets Ian McMillan and Majabeen Ghazal.

On Saturday 4th July there will be a variety of activities taking place at the school. Among them is a chance to explore climate change issues raised by the students and discussed with Five Women from Five Continents – Dr Vandana Shiva from India, Dr Helen Caldicott from Australia, Professor Wangari Maathai from Kenya, UK MP Clare Short, and Poly Gazi from America. In the afternoon there is a ‘Great Debate’ planned with a panel of experts including Paul Hudson, BBC Look North’s weatherman, and Cllr Andrew Cooper.

There is an opportunity for 8 students (aged 14 – 19) to be involved per school. Please see the attached flyer for more information. Sunday 5th July will be a community festival and the opening of the school’s new Science Garden.Come along to find out more about climate change and how young people are getting involved.
