In a society that appears to generate greater demands on the individual the Physical Education Department feel it can play a major role in preparing young people to meet these challenges.

Whilst we do not claim that our subject area is a panacea for all students’ needs we do feel that we are favourably disposed to contribute to the school aims as laid out in the school Action and Development Plan.

When assessing our successes or failures we believe it is more important for a child to achieve their full potential in all areas of physical, mental and social development rather than elitism in one.

The department offer a comprehensive range of curricular and extra-curricular experiences to try to meet the needs of the individual pupils and strives to provide a firm base of knowledge from which they can develop favourable attitudes towards taking responsibility for their own learning, health and development throughout their lives.

All students irrespective of their abilities are encouraged to give of their best through honest physical endeavour and to appreciate strengths and weaknesses in themselves and others. Responsible attitudes to working alone and in collaboration with others are fundamental in our teaching and we try to foster qualities of leadership, fair play and team spirit.

Our role in promoting leisure activities is important and we hope we have given our pupils the confidence, self-esteem and desire to continue active participation after leaving Shelley College to which ever level they aspire.
