The mass media; television, film, newspapers, magazines, radios etc - play an increasingly important role in our society, providing us with information and entertainment. Also the media play an important part in shaping our attitudes and social values. By studying a variety of media text, you will be encouraged to develop a critical understanding of the role of mass media in society.
The course is based around a study of key media concepts and media platforms, and the important questions and debates they raise, proving the essential tools for any critical reading of media texts.
Investigations of contemporary media texts, research based critical investigations, and practical production projects will be underpinned by these key concepts and platforms.
In summary, we want to turn you from passive consumers of the media, as someone who watched the television for pure entertainment, to active consumers, where you criticise and challenge what you are being shown.
