What is a BTEC National Award?

A BTEC National award is equivalent to 1 A-Level and is a practical, work-related course. You learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. This is primarily ICT based with occasional practical activities.

It introduces you to the employment area you have chosen and provides a good basis to go on to a more advanced work-related qualification.

What is the course structure?
The course is made up of six units – three core units that everyone takes and three specialist units.

What subjects will I study?
All students take the three core units:

  1. The Body in Sport
  2. Health, Safety and Injury
  3. Training and fitness for sport

You take three specialist units from one of the following pathways:
Sports Coaching
Sports development
Work Based Project
Practical sports
Sport and society
Leadership in sport
Exercise, Health and lifestyle
Working with children in sport

How is the course assessed?
All units are assessed and graded and an overall grade for the qualification is awarded (Pass, Merit, and Distinction)

What can I do at the end of the course?
With further training or study, students go into careers in:

  1. Sports Centres
  2. Leisure Centres
  3. Outdoor Activities Centre

BTEC National Diploma/ Certificate/ Award in Sport
Advanced VCE in Leisure and Recreation

What is a BTEC First Diploma?

A BTEC First Diploma is a practical, work-related course. You learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. This is primarily ICT based with occasional practical activities.

It introduces you to the employment area you have chosen and provides a good basis to go on to a more advanced work-related qualification.

A BTEC First Diploma is equivalent to four GCSEs grades A*– C

What is the course structure?

What subjects will I study?
All students take the two core units:
The Body in Sport
Health, Safety and Injury

You take four specialist units from one of the following pathways:
Sports Industry
Preparation for sport
Work Based Project
Practical Sport
Planning and Leading sports activities
Instructing exercise and fitness
Sport and Leisure facility operations

How is the course assessed?
All units are assessed and graded and an overall grade for the qualification is awarded (Pass, Merit, and Distinction)

What can I do at the end of the course?
With further training or study, students go into careers in:

What is a BTEC First certificate in Travel and Tourism?

A BTEC First certificate is a practical, work-related course. You learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. This is primarily ICT based with occasional practical activities.

It introduces you to the employment area you have chosen and provides a good basis to go on to a more advanced work-related qualification.

A BTEC First Certificate is equivalent to 2 GCSEs grades A*– C

What is the course structure?
The course is made up of three units – two core units that everyone takes and one specialist unit.

What subjects will I study?
All students take the two core units:

The UK Travel and Tourism Industry
Exploring Customer Service in Travel and Tourism

You take one specialist unit from one of the following pathways:
UK Travel and Tourism Destinations
European Holiday Destinations
Business Skills for Travel and Tourism
Developing Employability Skills for Travel and Tourism

How is the course assessed?
All units are assessed and graded and an overall grade for the qualification is awarded (Pass, Merit, and Distinction)

What can I do at the end of the course?
With further training or study, students go into careers in:

  1. Working abroad
  2. Tourism centres throughout the UK
  3. Holiday companies
  4. Travel agents

BTEC National Diploma/ Certificate/ Award in Sport
