Extended Service Parental Questionnaire
As you may be aware, all schools have to be providing access to Extended Services within the next few years. We are doing research into the sort of activities that would be of interest to you and your family as it is really important that we get the views of everyone involved (our stakeholders) and that our budget is spent wisely.
The Royal Academy of Arts A-Level Summer Exhibition On-line 2010
The Royal Academy of Arts A-Level Summer Exhibition On-line 2010 is entered by schools all over the UK with over 1,300 submissions were made, and one of our A2 Art, Craft & Design students at Shelley College, Amy-Kate Newsome has made it through to the prestigious short list.
Ski trip to Livigno 2011, book your place!!

UCAS Yr12 parents evening Monday 5th July 2010 7-8pm in the Altitude Cafe
This is an information giving evening based on the UCAS process for parents only. There will be opportunities for parents to ask questions at the end of the evening. Parking will be available from 6.30pm. Any queries please contact the Sixth Form office.
Funny Fluids: An illustrated talk on the physics of the strangest fluids.
On Monday 28th of June at the Altitude Café from 19:00 - 20:00, Dr Daniel Read from the University of Leeds presents "Funny Fluids". Colourful, Edible Gardens in the Park
Come and view the spectacular gardens
at Beaumont Park, Huddersfield from 13:00 till 16:30 on Sunday 27th June 2010. There will also be interesting stalls, Bands and prizes will be awarded to the best garden. This event has been organised by the Rotary Club of Huddersfield.
Please support Shelley College's attempt to retain the title of 'Best in Show' at The Colourful, Edible Gardens in the Park Competition. Volunteers are required to assemble the garden on the Sunday morning from 11.00 am and you can bring your edible plants in from next week. If you would like to help out on the day please collect a student letter from Mrs Lumb.
Active School Vouchers
Active kids vouchers are now being collected by the P.E department. These can be collected at Sainsbury's stores, at petrol stations and when you shop for groceries online. Last year we collected over 1,000 in which we recieved a set of Boccia Balls and an electronic scoreboard. If you collect any or have any relatives, friends that do so, please bring them into School and leave them with a member of the P.E. department.
Ski Trip 2010: Livigno
On the 10th April, 60 students and 7 staff met at Leeds/Bradford Airport for the annual Shelley College Ski trip. Our destination was Venice Treviso by plane (for the first time ever, which would prove to be our downfall!) and then on to Livigno. After an excellent flight and a seamless transfer to resort we hit the slopes in beautiful sunshine.
Shelley College came 1st place at this year's Rock Challenge!
Shelley College have worked together with ‘Attitude Dance Company’ to create a spectacular showcase performance for this year's Rock Challenge Competition! After months of hard work and rehearsals, Shelley College swept the floor with first place, whilst also receiving nominated awards for concept and originality and being the most helpful team towards other competitors in the competition. The commitment and enthusiasm of the whole production team and performers has been phenomenal. Good luck to every body involved for the Northern Premier Grand Final on the 27th May!

The Einstein Experience
Joining us on Monday 24th May 2010 will be Albert Einstein! He will be popping into science classes throughout the day and having lunch with us too. If you miss out on the chance to meet him during the day come along to our STEM Community Conference from 6.30 pm - 7.30 pm with refreshments from 6.00 pm. The illustrated talk will take place in the Altitude cafe. The event will cater for all abilities and families are very much invited.

Once again students from Shelley College took part in a host of events to celebrate all things scientific. Since becoming a specialist Science College in 2003 Shelley College has promoted Science subjects during this special week every year. 2010 was no exception. The launch event took place on Saturday 13th March from 10.00 am until 3.00 pm. Read more about it and watch the video here.
Project Trust
Project Trust is charity organisation that specialises in sending young people abroad for gap years. Andy Clayton and Caroline Openshaw have each been selected by Project Trust to take this opportunity, Andy has been selected to spend 12 months in South Africa and Caroline has been selected to spend 8 months in Uganda.
The Snow Ball
In October a group of Year 11 students began to learn how to ballroom dance. Every Tuesday evening after school they came to learn dances such as the Cha Cha Cha, Salsa, Rock n Roll to name just three.
OFSTED Latest
Many of you will know that Shelley College was inspected on Monday 8th and Tuesday 9th February this year. We cannot release details of their findings until OFSTED have completed all their verification procedures. However, the inspection team were very complimentary about the school and the report should be very positive indeed. They were particularly impressed with the students, who were a real credit to the school and themselves.
Astronomy Club Launch Event ...
Watch for shooting stars, planets and comets at our launch event. Introducing our resident experts Dr Marchesini and Mr Beaumont who will be helping students set up their own telescopes to view the nights sky. On the night we will be joined by Mr Scott Marley from Bradford University who provide us with an insight to the latest software where students can program a very powerful robotic telescope in Tenerife an download their own images.

ROC SOC Launch Event too....
Rockets will be launched at 3:15 pm on the school playing field to mark the launch of Astronomy Club and ROCSOC. After Easter students will be able to make their own rockets in an after school workshop then launch them on the school playing field. Measurements will be taken and prizes awarded for the most successful rocket launch over the term. If students want to stay on for the Astronomy Launch tea will be provided. From cryogenics to those with explosive tendencies. Our illustrated talk will begin at 3.15 pm in the Altitude Café (Sixth form Building). Refreshments will be served from 3.00 pm. Careers Convention
The Careers Convention will take place on Tuesday 26 January 2010, 6:30 - 8:30pm.
The evening is aimed at Year 11, but all year groups are encouraged to attend. The evening is designed to allow students and their parents to obtain information about a range of courses, careers and training opportunities.
There will be stands with representatives from local training providers such as S&S Training, A&R Training, CMS Training. Representatives from universities and colleges such as The University of Huddersfield, Leeds University and Kirklees College will be available to offer information, advice and guidance. The school has invited a variety of employers such as the NHS, RAF, solicitors and a travel agency.This event has always been very well attended and feedback from students and parents has been very positive.
The 2009 Shelley College Showcase
This took place on the 17th & 18th December 2009 at the end of last term. Over the 2 performances students amazed parents, sixth formers and the whole school with their unbelievable talents.
STEM: Kitchen Sink Science
Students from across the pyramid and Kirklees joined our well trained Year 9 Science Ambassador for a morning of exciting experimentation. Seven laboratories were open for families to share in the learning experience. Experiments included making blow up balloons, Alka-Seltzer rockets, creating lava lunacy, corn flour slime, the aptly named stupid egg trick and a fizzing rainbow!
STEM: Darwin Diaries:
Students took part in an excellent opportunity on Monday 16th November 2009 to share the dream and they heard about Darwin's life and achievements, while Darwin himself heard from students about 21st century technology and his position in our modern curriculum.
Presentation Evening:
On Wednesday 11th November 2009 was our Annual Award Evening. The evening which took place at Galpharm Stadium gave a flavour of all the successes members of our school have enjoyed over the past twelve months.
Kellie Jepson: 'My experience as a Plinther':
On Friday the 25th of September 2009, I stood on the fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square in London. As I am studying Anthony Gormley in A-Level Art, I thought it was a good opportunity to experience some of his work by applying to stand on the fourth plinth. I couldn’t believe my luck, when I got accepted because out of 30,000 applicants, only 2000 got to be ‘Plinthers’.
Médecins sans Frontières Charity Blanket Raffle:
The project started in September 2008 when a group of sixth form students started to learn to knit. From there we graduated to producing squares, and co-opted more members - from Grandmas to generous local businesses who donated wool for the project. Soon we had enough squares to produce a blanket which we raffled to raise funds for Médecins sans Frontières.
Martha's Vinyard:
This year’s trip began at 3.45am on a cold Wednesday morning. We made our way to Manchester airport tired but excited at the prospect of going to Martha’s Vineyard. We arrived on the Vineyard at approximately 7.00pm...
STEM: The ABLE Project: Aquaponics
Our STEM students created nutrient rich medium for growing plants using liquid fertilisers, so that the Koi fish are returned to a more suitable aquatic habitat. We hope to grow herbs, salad leaves and strawberries next summer for our school lunches.
STEM: Darwin Diaries:
On Monday 16th November 2009, 6:30pm at the Altitude Café step back in time to 1881 and the aged Charles Darwin has taken a nap after his customary thinking walk at Down House, in Kent. He is amazed to discover on walking that he has somehow, arrived in the present day, with a modern £10 note in his pocket. Is he dreaming? If so, it is an excellent opportunity for you to share a dream and learn about Darwin's life and achievements, while Darwin learns from you about 21st century technology and his positions in our modern curriculum.
Shelley College Field Trip to Arran
Six Year 13 Geology students travelled to the Isle of Arran from 19th to the 23rd September 2009.
Sarah Lawrence: One and Other, Trafalgar Square
Sarah Lawrence, a former Shelley College student took part in Anthony Gromley's artwork, 'One and Other'. She was one of 2,400 applicants selected out of 33,000 to be placed on the 4th plinth in Trafalgar square. Each person spends one hour on the plinth as part of a continuous occupation lasting 100 days and nights.
THE MUSIC DEPARTMENT NEEDS YOU!
The Music Department is looking to obtain another piano for students to practice on. It does not need to be in perfect condition but should be playable and tuneable. If any parent knows of an instrument which is available, either as a donation or at a relatively low cost could they please contact Mr Platt in the Shelley Music department. Cafe Scientifique
Cafe Scientifique will be launched on Monday 12th October 2009 in the Altitude building. Joining us will be an ex student Tim Gee who is about to spend 16 months working in Antarctica as a Plant Engineer. Tim will take us through his time at Shelley College and his career path so far. He will tells us about the latest development in Antarctica with particular reference to climate change and what provisions are in place to work in temperatures around -40 degrees!
The Able Project:
On Monday 28th September 2009 from 6.30 pm - 8.00 pm Shelley College will launch the STEM programme for this year based on a Global Challenge to build a sustainable Aquaponics unit in Nepal. The demonstration unit will be removed shortly but students on the STEM project will complete a feasibility study on whether a much larger facility could be installed to help a community feed themselves with both fish and crops grown hydroponically.

Garden Competition
Shelley College took part in their first ever Garden Competition on Sunday 28th June 2009 at Beaumont Park. We won the Secondary school category and then went on to win the prestigious title of Best in Show receiving a £10 gift voucher from Armitages Garden Centre and £25 cash along with an impressive engraved Rotary Award.
Virgin Mission Galactic Competition
On Thursday 16th of July 2009, four Year 9 students Robyn Whiting, Jordan Kennett, Leonnard Kenny and David Rodgers will be travelling to London to take part grand finals of Mission Virgin Galactic. Find out how they got through the process by clicking here.
Sixth Form Induction Day
Students will attend sixth form induction on Monday 22nd June 2009 and Tuesday 23rd June 2009 or Thursday 25th June 2009 and Friday 26th June 2009, and students will have received a letter notifying them of which 2 days they will attend. For more information please click here.
Internet Safety Awareness
On 24th-25th June 2009, Kirklees Safeguarding Children Board are putting on an e-safety event for parents/carers and those who work with children and young people. The will be presentations looking at the opportunites and risks posed by communication technology and how to communicate with your children and young people on staying safe on the internet.
