Product Design: Resistant Materials. AS/A2. GCE
Course Content:
Unit 1:AS RMT is based on two Units, Portfolio of Creative Skills (30%)
This is coursework based and is divided into three assessment objectives. Unit 2: Design and Technology in Practice (20%) will be an externally assessed examination (1hr 30 mins).
For the Portfolio of Skills there are three sub-units:-
Unit 1.1: IMOD Product Investigation (30 marks available).
This independent working module (iMod) challenges students to select a familiar product of their choice and evaluate it using specified criteria. The module is launched during the induction session in July and students are expected to arrive in September prepared with appropriate background research (digital photos, technical data etc).
Unit 1.2: Design and Development (30 marks available).
The Topic theme for this Unit will focus on developing illustration and visual presentation skills. To do this students will be expected to choose their own topic/theme, write a brief, specification and then develop an appropriate product that will be evaluated. For example; a student might choose to design a vehicle to suit a particular situation. Alternatively an idea may be based on storage of some kind or even a more compact 'hand-held' device. Specific themes will be discussed with individuals!
Unit 1.3: Product Manufacture (30 marks available).
For this assessment objective students will be provided with the CAD specifications (drawings) for a prototype product. They will be challenged to undertake the 'R&D' or Research and Development work to demonstrate the viability of the new prototype prior to Mass Production. They will have to manufacture each component of the complex system of sub-components that makes up the product, an angle poise work light with distinctive contemporary styling.
Unit 3: A2 RMT is based on two Units: : Designing for the Future. (20%) will be an externally assessed examination (2hrs).
Unit 4: Commercial Design. (30%).
Unit 3: This unit is broken down into sub-sections as follows: 3.1: Industrial and Commercial practice. 3.2: Systems and Control. 3.3: Design in Context. 3.4: Sustainability. Students will study theory topics themed on these sub-sections to enhance their Design capability and their examination performance.
Unit 4: The intellectual challenge for this Unit involves publishing an A3 portfolio to support the Design and Manufacture of a commercially viable prototype product.
Assessment objectives:
a) Research and Analysis.
b) Product Specification.
c) Design Development.
d) Planning.
e) Making.
f) Evaluation.
There are a total of 90 marks available for this section.

Unit 1.3: Product Manufacture (30 marks available).
For this assessment objective students will be expected to source a set of professional/commercial architectural plan drawings of a building. The challenge is to develop the 2D information into a 3 dimensional presentation system (model) to enable a prospective owner/End user to make critical judgements about the buildings potential. Students will have to manufacture the modelled building to an exact scale and with realistic detail to establish a convincing ‘illusion’.

Product Design (Textiles) AQA
This specification has been designed to encourage candidates to take a broad view of design and technology, to develop their capacity to design and make products and to appreciate the complex relations between design, materials, manufacture and marketing. It is helpful but not necessary for candidates to have studied GCSE Design and Technology before commencing on this specification and no prior knowledge of design and technology is required for candidates to undertake this course.
Unit 1: Materials, Components and Application
A 2 hour written paper primarily based on Materials and Components. Students will have the opportunity to study and work with a variety of textile materials to enable them to understand the working characteristics, physical properties, cost and availability which influence the choice of materials in design situations.
50% of the total AS marks
25% of the total A Level marks
Unit 2: Learning through Designing and Making
This is a design and make unit where students apply their knowledge to the designing and making of their own project. The coursework may take a number of forms, a single design and make project, two smaller projects or a portfolio of work. This work may be fashion or interior related depending on the students preferences.
50% of the total AS marks
25% of the total A level marks
Unit 3: Design and Manufacture
A 2 hour written paper based primarily on design and manufacture. Students will further their knowledge and understanding of materials and components, design and market influences and processes and manufacture.
25% of the total A Level marks
Unit 4: Designing and Making Practice
This is a design and make unit, where knowledge of the AS and A2 subject content is applied to the manufacture of candidates own projects. Students are encouraged to develop and sustain their creativity and innovative practice in their chosen area of textiles to produce a single, substantial design and make portfolio and product.
25% of the total A Level marks
Candidates can progress to a wide variety of careers using this A level – many go on to Art Foundation courses, Degree courses in all aspects of design including, textiles, fashion, interior design, buying, technology, merchandising, retail, sales and marketing.
Home Economics
(Food, Nutrition and Health)
Level; AS and A Level
Exam Board: OCR
Course Content
This new specification allows students to develop an understanding of issues related to society and health, resource management, nutrition and food production through four units of study. It is excellent preparation for students wishing to pursue careers in nutrition, food science, sports science, food technology and consumer protection. Emphasis is on the practical aspects of home economics. At AS Level both units are externally assessed. At A2 level one unit is externally assessed and one is coursework.
AS level
Society and health: Candidates gain an understanding of demography, family and society, environmental, social issues and health.
Resource management: Candidates aquire a thorough knowledge of resources, food provision, selection and purchase of food and household goods, food prep and cooking equipment, food safety and hygiene.
A2 level
Coursework Study: In this unit candidates select their own content and develop their own task.
Nutrition and Food production: Candidates study nutrients and energy; nutritional and dietary needs of different groups of people; properties of food; design, development and production of food; advances in the food industry
